Title: First Time Going to keep corals

r33f-boy - June 13, 2006 04:48 PM (GMT)
Well, Since my tank seems so plain with just rocks and fish, I planned to buy some corals to make the tank look better. I'm going be ordering some Star polyps from ebay, Which is 15 for 25 polyps and 12 dollar for a 2-3 day shipping.

And aPurple tip frogspawn.

Using a 130 watt pc for my 29 which I already told. Using a ps75 skimmer with a fluval filter for current. Is this good enough to keep these corals?

What is the height of the tank? Are the water parameters testing fine? Green Star Polyps should do fine with that amount of light, and the Frogspawn should also do fine but make sure you give each coral sufficient room between eachother. You could also look into Mushrooms as they are a easy to care for coral and look great in my opinion.

The height is prbably about 1 foot, Im guessing. Water paraments are fine.

Nitrate: 0 ppm
Nitrites: 0 ppm
Ammo: Safe
Ph: 8.1
Salinty: 1.022

I think that should be good enough.

Hiya r33f-boy,

Let's see some tank shots!

Also I think I would raise the salinity up to 1.024.
Everything else seems to be fine. JMHO.

Perfectblue - June 17, 2006 02:56 PM (GMT)
Yeah I agree with Ezent2u about raising the salinity to 1.024-1.025.

r33f-boy - June 17, 2006 02:58 PM (GMT)
Ok.

I was wondering about opinions. I might be ordering a stalk of xenia off of ebay. It's 8.99 for the xenia and 15 for 2-3 shipping.
The main question is
Do u think the xenia will be able to survive being shipping for 2-3 days?

r33f-boy - June 30, 2006 10:30 PM (GMT)
Answer ASAP. Thanks alot.

Xenia is a good coral. Multiplies very quickly from what I've seen. 2-3 day shipping is alittle long as overnight is perferred, but is might do alright. Does the seller give any type of guarantee?

r33f-boy - July 1, 2006 01:24 AM (GMT)
He will only gurantee if it is shipped overnight.
The red pulsing xenia (click those)
He has had the coral for over 2 years now. So PB do you think I should not order it of take a chance?

Perfectblue - July 1, 2006 03:22 AM (GMT)
The Xenia looks good and the seller seems to have almost all positive feedback. It is up to you as it is your money but just make sure that your tanks parameters, and salinity are in check as well as everything is in working order. Also make sure to acclimate the coral slowly and Xenia can be tricky so make sure that the water parameters stay stable.

r33f-boy - July 1, 2006 03:01 PM (GMT)
Well, since 2-3 days seems long I might take awhile to think about it.

Eznet2u - July 2, 2006 01:38 AM (GMT)
Hey r33f-boy, you might want to look around at a LFS for Xenia,
as they don't "travel" well, or you might want to buy it from a
dealer that is willing to give a 2 week stay alive warranty.
But if you do order online, pay the extra and get it overnighted.

JMHO :D

r33f-boy - July 2, 2006 03:18 AM (GMT)
O, Ok. But the Xenia around my place cost alot. Even a torch coral is 75 dollars :o And its the size of a quarter. I might be starting with zoathids than xenia. :D Since they seem much cheaper.

Perfectblue - July 2, 2006 04:40 AM (GMT)
Zoas are much cheaper than Xenia and alot hardier. They are by far some of the easiest corals to keep and come in all types of color morphs.

r33f-boy - July 2, 2006 05:07 PM (GMT)
Ok, Then. I change my mind. I am going to look into zoo's than xenia.
Also do they multiply when water paraments are well?

Eznet2u - July 3, 2006 03:32 PM (GMT)
Just put coral rubble next to them, and they will grow off
onto it. When you separate them just pull a part the rocks.
Then run carbon for a couple days after to pick up the toxins
that they release. WEAR GLOVES as these toxins are harmful
to humans as well as other coral!

Mushrooms are great too! Very easy to propagate! Just snip
off a little of the edge drop it in a rubble pile, it will attach in a
few days and grow into a new 'shroom. :D

r33f-boy - July 3, 2006 04:53 PM (GMT)
Cool, Thanks. I will be looking into zoo's and mushrooms than.
