this is wrong topic, Bartier or admin, please move this to freshwater 101:

your green water is an algae bloom. its fairly common and can happen when you leave your lights on for to long, or when your tank has direct exposure to sunlight. there are several things out there that will help clear this up, but water changes help a little.

Thanks for the advice about how it could be create, but this topic wont only apply to freshwater. It also has start happening in my saltwater tank too. A mini 2.5 gallon tank. Would a water clear work better or would a algae medication work better?

there are actual medications for algae blooms, so look in with the algae chems.

chinese algae eaters get 11 inches and very agressive. this isnt algae you can necessarily see, so they would be ineffective anyway.

r33f-boy, with respect to the saltwater tank, in addition to the other suggestions given here, you might want to add a clean up crew such as crabs and snails. Here are some critters to help keep the algae bloom at bay.

Meanwhile, make sure you are not over-feeding, which will contribute to the creating an algae bloom. Also, if it is a new tank, it is can be part of the break-in period. Finally, what type of filtration are you using and on what size tank? You may need a stronger or larger filter or perhaps need to use more bio-filter media.

For my saltwater tank I'm using a ps75 protein skimmer. I have never fed anything to my 2.5 gallon tank yet. I just used a small 3 gallon or smaller filter that was for saltwater tank.
